About typefacefiles

typefacefiles is an independent reference to the families in the Google Fonts library, built from the font files rather than from descriptions. It is run by Kennedy Bryant and is not affiliated with Google or with any type designer.

Each family page answers practical questions about the files: how tall the lowercase sits, how wide and how dark the letters are, which weights, styles and scripts exist and which variable axes the font has, and which other families come closest in proportion. The type finder applies the same measurements to all 1,899 families at once.

Source

All data comes from the public google/fonts repository (commit 9862abc, 28 October 2026), copied with a standard git clone. Family names, designers, categories, subsets, axes and dates come from each METADATA.pb file; every measurement comes from the font file. The fonts are the work of their designers and are licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, the Apache License 2.0 or the Ubuntu Font Licence 1.0. How we measure explains each figure.

What the site does not do

It does not rate, review or recommend typefaces, and it does not host the font files: download them from the repository or from Google Fonts. There are no popularity figures, because the repository has none.
